Re: Need to increase disk size but parted seems to be missing

Fri May 11, 2012 9:30 pm

I'm trying to resize my partition from 2GB to 8GB but when I type parted it says command not found.

I haven't got my Pi yet so I'm practising with Oracle Virtual box and the smaller version of Debian.

Can someone please help.  I've tried using aptitude and searched for parted which it finds and I press g but then it tries to install Radion or Nvidia drivers!!!

I'm getting very confused

If you have access to a linux install with a gui, I'd download gparted.  It's just a graphical representation of parted, but it's a lot more natural to use in my opinion.

If that's not an options, I'd try

sudo apt-get install parted

That should get it for you.

Hi Abishur,

Thanks for the help.

Installed parted and see what you mean, not very friendly so downloaded gparted as an iso and used that to repartition the disk before booting into it.

Thanks for the help.

The Wiki also has a step by step guide using parted on the command line which I just used to repartititon 2 8GB cards - worked fine.

On a Sandisk 8GB card, I had to reduce the calculated starting position by 1, probably because the last cylinder was not full. I haven't explored this further to check what's going on, but instead installed and used gparted!
