ripping cd's

Wed Sep 25, 2013 10:00 am

Hi all,
Very simple type here so please forgive any stupid error but hey thats why this is the beginners section.
I would like to setup my pi to rip cd's straight to a usb hard drive.
Looking on here the only results I'm finding are for abcde which everyone says is brill and easy to use.
However I can't find any guides or wiki's on how to use it, set it up, nothing...
Can anyone offer any guidance or an alternative that might be simpler for an absolute beginner?
Thanks
Jon

Thanks guys.
Ripping cd audio is what I want to do.
I have installed abcde but have no clue what to do next.
I stuck a cd in the drive and typed abcde into a terminal, it ran the cd up and output a load of info that I guess it had pulled from a directory type website but thats it.
I'm now sat looking at the track listings and the word (END) don't know how to tell it yes thats the correct info, start ripping or where to save the files to etc.

I've never used it but looking at the man pages ...

abcde -o mp3

should just get them all as .mp3 ...

Tried -o mp3 and get
[Error] abcde: id3v2 is not in your path.
[Info] Define the full path to the executable if it exists in your system.

There is also "ripit" which allows some more settings (quality, bitrate,...) and fetches the title information from CDDB...

Code: Select all

apt-get install ripit

Thanks Richard,
Have now installed the other bits and tried again.
It now pulls down the track info from cddb and stops with the following highlighted.
/home/pi/abcde.b1102f0c/cddbchoices
If I hit return it gives the next track etc etc
Still isn't actually ripping anything or creating any files?

Nope not making any sense out of this at all.
Does anyone know where there is a simple do this, then type that guide? There always seems to be an assumption that you already know what you are doing.
Why is this always so bl@#&dy awkward
Annoyed and confused :(

Does it have to be command-line based? If not, Asunder is a really good graphical client that you can use to rip Audio CDs. You can install with the following commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install asunder
Sound Juicer is a similar package if you don't like Asunder and can be installed with the following commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sound-juicer
Desktop
Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 3.0 GHz
4 GB RAM - 250 GB System - 1.5 TB Data
Xubuntu 12.10

Raspberry Pi
2 x Model B 512 MB RAM
RaspBMC

Thanks bqaggie,
No def doesn't need to be command line in fact that is one of the issues I struggle with most, without a GUI you get no pointers on what you should be doing.
Will investigate your suggestions a bit later when I get chance.
Cheers

(Yes, I saw the later posts and I'm glad you got things working the way you want.)

The assumption is that people can find and read the man page. Granted, that's a stiff assumption in many cases, since the man pages are usually written in "programmer" rather than common English. Kind of goes back to the sort manuals a lot of people cut their teeth on...things like the IBM System Reference Library manuals. The information is in there, but for a beginner it's rather tough to dig out.
