NAS

Wed Sep 25, 2013 8:28 am

Hi all, having had help from the Forum on a WiFi issue I now need assistance again, as a precurser to attempting to set up a NAS I decided to firstly add an external hard drive, before connection I installed ntfs-3g then connected a Samsung 3TB external HD to my USB hub, before I could begin to use the LX terminal to mount the drive etc a Windows like box appeared asking if I wanted to open the drive with File manager. I then tried to use mount commands to no avail but I can access anything on the drive. Does this mean it can be used like a plug and play device on the Pi?

Hi there;
Yeah the Pi X desktop has a facility to auto mount USB devices, however if you want to use the Pi as a NAS and not be reliant of having to go into the X desktop all the time then you need to put a line into the /etc/fstab file. Some info on mounting large disks here; http://raspi.tv/2012/how-to-mount-and-u ... spberry-pi
And here is some info on making the Pi into a NAS with shared drives that a Windows PC can use; http://blogs.arcsoftwareconsultancy.com ... etworking/

Thanks for your advice, will have a go at following it as soon as am able. The forum makes things so much better for me and others as although I still stumble around in the dark, to some degree I do see glimmers, I wouldnt say light, if not at the tunnels end at least showing the way.
