Okay so I definitely want a pi!
I just want to know more certain of what I'm getting into. Will i be able to play mp3's and mp4 videos from an external hard drive without delay or latency? And will i still be able to reconnect the hard drive back to my windows machine to add more video's and music as time goes on? I heard NTFS doesn't work well and i should format the drive with Ext4, but that isn't compatible with windows. I basically want an entertainment center, but still be able to add new videos and songs from my windows machine as that is way faster for downloading music and videos.

Can someone help, I am one click away from buying my whole bundle.....!!!!

Thanks,

John

Most people use the pi for programming but I can use my freecom disk drive. So maybe you will have luck with your disk drive like I did. 8-)

use HDMI audio / video
MP3 yes
Mp4 yes if they are h264 [no lag]
yes - even share the HD and xfer them from windows
ntfs is OK .. just not as good as ext4

get one and play with it and see if it works for you...
it wont down load from the internet any faster than your existing machine [ and may be worse]

No your missing the point,
I want to connect an external hard drive and create a portable media unit (with music and movies) that i can carry with me anywhere and have all my music and movies stored on one device. Making this work smoothly and still being able to connect HDD to my pc for adding new music and movies. The file system and format of media files will be the challenge i believe. I will also be using the pi for programming and other stuff, but the hard drive is for the media.
