Hello guys,

A specific title, but actually a bit broader subject. My project is to find a LCD display that would give me something similar to this: http://www.velocitek.com/asset.....olEver.png

My requirements are: works in sunlight, lowish power and around 6'' in viewing area.

Broad subject: what are my options for that? I've read quite a bit on the forums; getting it through usb, hdmi,... hacking some old parts,...

From what I've managed to understand, my best bet is to use a controller board along with a specific lcd. So for example this transflective LCD http://www.crystalfontz.com/pr.....40CX-TFH-T  which has a built in  Epson S1D13700 controller, could be linked to a controller board (see http://www.lcdinfo.com/product.....13700.html ), and then usb. Price for the LCD is $100 and board $45 .... not really my budget.

So my questions are:

1) Am I going in the right direction?

2) Are those the prices I will have to pay to get my project done?

it shouldn't be hard to interface an LCD to the RPi with a microcontroller in between. You can drive a 20x4 charLCD or a 320x240 TFTLCD with an inexpensive MCU. Just have the RPi talk to the MCU via higher level command (thought the serial port) and let the MCU do the drawing on the screen.

hzrnbgy's solution is what we will be using when our Pi arrives:

On our G-Scale Shunting Puzzle Layout, 'Bruksbanan Mk2', a PICAXE will be running a 4 line x 20char OLED display showing the track and point settings (using / or _)  and RFid tags read by MERG readers identify the passing wagons to [the RPi] which can then display the appropriate picture [probably by USB to a Photo-viewer] and tell the PICAXE which wagon to show where on the track diagram.  Both will be making use of GPIs for point and uncoupler position feedback.

(And in a 'reversal of reality', 2 of the point levers in the ground frame will be moved by the points used in the shunting.... thus moving the attached 1:22 operator
