As I have no access to wired router I am going to try the USB data stick route.

So I downloaded Gambas 3 which arrives as a gambas3-3.1.1.tar.bz2 on the pc

Do I run install or just copy this file straight to the data stick?

Does the data stick have to be in any special format or will the Raspberry be able to read it?

Once onĀ  the Raspberry do you just run 'install'?

Very eager to get my Pi doing things.

The Raspberry Pi runs Linux, so it should be able to read pretty much any USB flash drive you use if it's formatted with FAT32 or NTFS (most are one of these) or one of several other formats.
