Should it be this slow? Or is it my SD card?

Sat Aug 03, 2013 7:02 pm

Im not sure how fast the Pi is meant to be when you open programs. Im assuming that the slow point is in it reading the information from the SD card. I have an 8gb Kingston Technology Class 4 SD HC.

Do you think its the card and if so what type would be recommended. Ive looked at the wiki and im a bit lost.

Thanks.

The higher the class number the better the card, up to a maximum of 10. (though some early Pi's had problems with class 10 cards). This has a list of cards with recommendations on performance: http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards

At the moment the Pi is slow on graphics intensive programs. The foundation is sponsoring work on Wayland/Weston that should be able to better utilise the Pi's graphics than the current X windows.

Remember the Pi is a lightweight PC so look for light apps rather than heavy one eg: Abiword rather than Libre Office.

Some facts would be useful.

Which programs?

How long do they take to load for you?

Basicaly all programmes are running slow, Scratch, Midori, anything I initiate, so I think its just the SD Card.

Ill look at getting a class 10 one.

Thanks.

Are you comparing it to your desktop (x86, i7) machine, by any chance?
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

Just saying but if your comparing the speed of the Pi to your Desktop/ Laptop the Pi is way slower because it cost about 300-1000$+ less, so don't expect it to be going at the speed of fibre optics.

Ok :)

Im not expecting super speeds, the programs load slow. That's what ive stated.

Im sure in another 10 years the raspberry pi 7 will be moving at a silly speed and be the size of a pea but im aware of its current limitiations. I was just trying to find out if I had a blockage in the system rooted at my SD card, which from what people have said previously I have.

I love pi

I know its small but I think its beautiful :)

Peace all
B.
