Monitoring wattage throughout house with Rii?

Sat Aug 03, 2013 5:09 pm

Hello everyone!

I am new to the forums but I have been lurking around here for some time. The thought of creating a monitor to accurately gauge the energy consumption throughout my house recently popped into my head, and I decided to make this a project that utilized Raspberry Pi. I've already seen examples of this, such as the RaspiWatt project on element14, but I was curious as to whether this was possible on a larger scale, i.e., a house, as well as making a more detailed version to pinpoint which areas in my house are using the most energy.

Have any of you ever tried/created a system to monitor electricity consumption throughout a house using Raspberry Pi?

If you do an internet search for raspberry.pi efergy you will find a number of hits for similar projects that attempt to re-use a commercially-available power monitor.

Possible but very expensive and cumbersome to implement such a system.

There are lots of whole house monitors that monitor the main meter and tell you the total kilowatt hours. But breaking that down to zones would require many monitors.

You could install monitors on each circuit BUT, Unless you pay extra money on a custom construction job, the typical house (US) is wired to save costs and not necessarily in a zone or room to room fashion. This means that a single circuit for outlets may span 2 or 3 rooms. For example 2 rooms that share a common wall. A lighting circuit may span 2 or 3 rooms as well but not necessarily the same rooms as the outlets.

To get an accurate indication you would need some type of monitor on every outlet.

This is just an example of a monitor...... may or may not work for what you want to do:
