open terminal
sudo apt-get install thunderbird
Any use? PS, no Pi, but IIRC TB is in deb arm repo. There may be more lightweight clients available - others will input if so

Hmm, I thought I'd pulled TB from the repo a while ago, but it seems not, in which case sorry....I'll have to step aside and let a knowledgeable person step in! Sorry, don't use email on my pi build

Couldn't you just install Synaptic and browse the "Email" section? There's a bunch of clients in there.

I tried email in the debian 19-4-2012 with no problems. I'm running using qemu, not the real hardware.
Resize the image and extend the main partition
sudo apt-get install synaptic
set sudo-mode to true
In synaptic review the list of email applications and chose icedove
Install icedove
Run it, follow the setup process, this meant giiving it the name I wanted to use and the username and password for the mail server. Answer a few questions, wait a bit and that was it. It receives and sends email.

You can also install the software center, which will help you a lot in searching a program.
Write in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install software-center
