Rasberry Pi for me?

Wed Jul 17, 2013 1:19 am

Hey all,
Just heard about this wicked device and I was wondering if someone could recommend if this is right for me?

Here is what I want:
Full 1080p over network (I currently have a WD Live TV Hub that has all my files .mkv) Range from 2 - 15GB With DTS.
Airplay is great functionality
Can I access anything like icefilms?
I understand Netflix doesn't work so that's unfortunate.

The other option I have is purchasing an Android for TV unit for $160 which has all functionality but the airplay, I just can't decide which way to go...

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

The drawbacks to the rpi as a media center are that there is no remote and it's not likely to support netflix, etc. It may also corrupt your SDcard at random, so occasionally an image needs to be re copied. Audio settings in XBMC are sub par and don't try seeking on the RPi.
Playing 1080p files from a shared network drive works. knowing it's limitations I'm fairly happy with the $60 device.

XBMC runs on the PI, which provides the features you're looking for...but the PI's CPU isn't the fastest. My PI has been relegated to a NAS/MPD server as I recently picked up a Minix G4 dual-core android stick for $50 that runs XBMC's much better, plus you can access Netflix through google's app store.
