Hi all,
Just ordering a few bits needed for when my Raspberry Pi arrives and I am a complete beginner again with this, starting from total scratch and this will no doubt be a foolish question to you all BUT.....
Will a SDHC card work with the Pi? All the things i've read seem to just state SD but looking on Amazon more or less all the 4Gb cards seem to be SDHC cards which i'm not certain would be compatible.
Can anyone clarify if it has to be just an SD card? It'd be hugely appreciated.
Thanks,
John

I am using an 8Gb Transcend Card. It is labelled as Class 6 and HC. It is in the Wiki with some other working cards.
I also have an 8GB Sandisk, but not tried that yet

Thanks very much for that, hugely appreciated. Just ordered a bunch of bits from Amazon and cannot wait for the Pi to arrive now. Not really done anything other than 'plug and play' since the days of 8 bits when I used to really enjoy trying to program little bits myself so really looking forward to attempting to learn a few bits again.

I've tested the following cards, all of which work fine:
- Sandisk 8GB Micro SDHC (with Sandisk MicroSD => SD adaptor) Class 4
- PNY 4GB SDHC Class 4
- Lexar 8GB SDHC Class4

The HC in SDHC just stands for "High Capacity" so you'll be fine.

Just dont go for Class 10.
Get a Class 6 or 4 from SanDisk or Transcend

Class 4 Sandisk Ultra cards run as fast as anything and are known to work.
If you just want it to work, then go for that.
Higher classes and different brands will probably work, but there's more risk.
If you like testing, want to contribute to wiki, and are happy to test new kernel versions, then go for the higher classes and different makes.

If you need two, they are currently on offer from Amazon (and Play too, I think) for £7.49.
An easy way to see which OS you prefer!

That offer isn't for Ultra cards. If you want Sandisk Ultra 4gb cards, go for the Play.com offer.

Take care with Class 6 cards, I've had tons of errors from both Sandisk (4Gb) and Verbatim (8Gb) Class 6 cards.
They appear to work well, but once in a while they'll timeout and fail, especially after heavy writes. Had filesystem corruption already because of this.
I'm back on Sandisk Class 4 2Gb and working fine, so stick with Class 4.

"someone" should trawl this site"s posts for repots of working cards and not working cards and make a list – if I get the time I might do that and post the findings on this thread…

pygmy_giant - that would be great. Should also update the eLinux Raspi Wiki:

I think the class 10 problem was solved in the latest Debian release. AIUI you don't get the full speed but it works. Getting the full speed would need a board change.

I use two 8GB kingstone SD cards I got for £4.99 each at aria. Shipping kills it though unless you have free forum member delivery, or you order a hell of a lot of SD cards...

This card is an SDHC and it works perfecly HC cards tend to boot and read/write faster than normal ones! And on Amazon they come super cheap with a load of memory!

How fast is the RPi SD-Reader? Does ist make sense to have a (working) class 10 card?
