Re: Initial Boot problems - check keyboards

Mon Apr 16, 2012 1:31 pm

Note for newbies to Linux like me.

Received my Raspberry today. It would not complete the initial boot process. Eventually worked out that it was not properly detecting my keyboard and hanging.

Then booted successfully without keyboard. Plugged keyboard in and problems again. Swapped with keyboard from Windows computer and all works ok.

The keyboard I initially tried to use was a cheap one, but not the cheapest available. Beware Texet keyboards.

I am now using it ok to type this on my Windows computer, but when plugging in needed original Windows 7 DVD for drivers.

Note generic USB may not equal standard USB as far as Raspberry is concerned.

The keyboard which is not working on Raspberry but working on Windows 7 is "Texet MB-768B"

The keyboard which is working on both is "Asda Multimedia Keyboad HK3014". Unfortunately no longer available, otherwise I would nip up tomorrow and get another.

I'm hoping that this info, along with all other compatible and non-compatible components encountered by the pioneers, will be made available so that those of us trailing behind in the Pi-receipt can make informed decisions about what to buy and what to avoid.

Exciting to read about the experiences of those currently getting their machines!!

The problem might actually be the power supply, not the keyboard.

I had a similar issue - the Pi wont work with a Logitec wireless usb/keyboard, however if I plug it into a powered hub it works fine.

That said, I bought a nice keyboard with a built in trackpad specifically for the pi and that wont work at all - the pi doent pick it up via its own USB or the powered hub, yet it works fine on my other machine.

I've hunted around to see if there are any form of generic keyboard or mouse packages in apt but I cant find anything at all.

Thanks. Just looked at back of keyboard and is rated 1.5a. The one that works is 0.05a. Some difference

Yup, its certainly low-power issues. My keyboard wont work if I have the Pi's power coming via the hub (in addition to the hub powering any other USB peripherals). Once I moved the PI's power off to its own dedicated power cable the keyboard worked.

It still wouldnt work via the Pi directly, it had to be powered via the hub. When plugged directly into the Pi the red LED dimmed and was struggling to run.

Wow it really is low on power. The hub can only power the keyboard. If I plug anything else in, they both die!

Yes, I read somewhere that both USB ports are fused with a 100mA (self repairing) fuse, so its less than 100mA for both mouse and keyboard!

Annoyingly it doesnt say, it's one of these though:

You'd expect a 7 port hub to be sufficiently powered :/

Thankfully I only want the keyboard plugged into it, however for those needing to plug wireless and other bits and bobs in, they will need something a fair bit beefier!

That is a ridiculously high power rating for a keyboard! Does it have a second purpose as a room heater?

Yes 1.5Amp for a keyboard is ridiculous! Maybe it has a built in hub? even then its still ridiculous.

I have a Dell SK-8135 keyboard with a 2-port USB hub that's rated at 5V / 1.5A.

rmwebs.  I am using the same hub as you, but not its power supply. The power supply I am using is off an old and bust Buffallo media server. It is rated at 5v 1a. The hub I bought last year for GBP1 from a boot sale, but its power supply has a USA plug. It's still in the junk drawer somewhere.

JamesH. I agree it's going back tomorrow

The odd thing is, I used it fine on a Mac Pro and had all 7 ports used for things that needed power, I cant quite fathom why its not working correctly with the pi :/

logitec k400r wireless works fine. I paid $8 on black friday for it. Wired is to close to tv when I have it plugged into it. Only time it hasn't worked is when I had the power switch off on it. Turning it on though solved the problem.
