Backing up SD Card is not working

Wed Jun 12, 2013 12:49 pm

I am using win32diskimager to backup my sd card and it just creates a 57MB file rather than 16GB of the actual card.I am following all the instructions I have found (ie I open a copy of an image (as diskimager will not create one from scratch) then select my sd card and then click read)

It is obviously just backing up the windows readable partition and not the linux one.

How do I fix this?

That instructions you have don't seem right.

1. Insert card with image in your cardreader and note the drive letter.
Very important: Make sure the same drive is shown in [Device]

2. Put the path and filename in the [Image File] field or click on the [select image file] icon and put the path a filename in there. You should name your image with xxxx.img extension.

3. Click [Read].

4. When done that image can be written to another card using the [Write] as before.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Somebody should make a Linux-based bootable ("Live") CD that boots up on an x86 PC and handles the imaging (in both directions).

Trying to do these tasks under Winblows using this "Win32DiskImager" thingie just seems like an exercise in pain to me.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.
