I bought the MPEG-2 key which is now enabled.
What I'd like to happen is for an avi to play smoothly with audio.
I tried VLC and have enabled "hardware acceleration" in the options. Playback is clunky but sound is good (both full screen and windowed)
I tried omxplayer? Video is better but sound is clunky(not usable), Ill have tp play with the switches I guess.
Is smooth avi playback possible using rasbian wheezy (Ive done all apt get adn upgrades including firmware i think) OR do i need to download some other OS image which does media playback better?
Is the VC1 codec used lots? Should I get it too (so i can play those ecoded videos back badly too)
To be honest I thought this would be the easiest question to get an answer to but its actually not...I thought everybody getting this box would

3)get it to play music
4)get it to play games
5)start programing
Isnt that the right order?

2 & 3 : Consider getting a second SD-card and install Raspbmc. (XBMC for RasPI) or OpenElec, that will most likely give you the best movie and music experience.
(but omxplayer should work very well also, but it will depend on codec's used.)

Quake 1 maybe for nostalgia and network fun...Would I have to find my old .PAK files?

Do some research . Forum member welshy has made
some threads where he discusses emulators very thouroughly.
Some games from the repo are unplayable - forum members have
often released an optimized working version to solve that.

omxplayer works vastly better (at least on my pi) if you start it from the command line without an x session. I must admit I was very surprised when i found out I could watch video without a startx first.
