Pi not working

Thu Mar 28, 2013 8:23 pm

I just got my Pi today and did everything they said to in order to download the Raspbian software. Howerver, the pi still didnt load but the red power LED was on. I then cleared the sd card and tried again. Same result. I cleared the SD card again (16gb card), and now my computer only says that he card holds 55.9gb. Any help will be appreciated.

I assume you mean 55.9Mb and not 55.9Gb?

That's the normal size for the boot partition which is the only partition you will see when inserting the card into a Windows computer.

Sounds like the SD card is OK, although you may want to check the checksum to make sure the file downloaded correctly. You could also try a different SD card; there were issues with particular makes and models with the older image, but it's much better now.

Most common problem with the Raspberry Pi is power related. Have you checked that the power supply is rated for 1A or more (should work from 700mA, but suggest 1A as minimum)? Also some wireless keyboards / mice could be drawing too much. It's worth trying a different power supply and with nothing else connected other than the monitor (and standard USB non-wireless keyboard / mouse if available).

There a lot of people new to the RaspberryPi miss the explanation that although your Mac or PC can write an SD card if you then view it it will not read everything thats been writen.

The produced card has a Dos partition that the PC or Mac can see and a Linux part that cannot be seen.

This Linux part comes into operation when the RPi boots but if you RPi has some other issue (More than likely power allways suspect power) then even though the SD card is correct it won't boot. And if you return it to your PC or Mac the part that the RPi is going to use (it is there) Yor PC or Mac just won't see it.

In addition if you have used the Wheezy image it only installs a small section of your SD Card this allows it to be loaded onto smaller cards you then run part of raspi-config and this uses EXPAND ROOTFS to expand the root file system to use the remainder (unused portion) of the SD card. ;)

In all likelyhood your SD is ok, the problem is probably power and there are a lot of threads on this issue.

I think it was the power. I had it plugged into my laptop for power, and when I used a wall adapter it worked. At least I think it was that. Also, I have a Rii Mini keyboard for the Pi. How do I connect it to the Pi with the USB dongle?

The problem with most dongle attached (Bluetooth Wireless sort of thing) is the draw they make on power from the RPi USB port this draws the power down within the RPi usually causing a reboot.

The easy answer is add a powered USB hub to the system and make this self powering.

USB Hub powered from self USB hub powers RPi Rpi controlls USB Hub.

In your case you would plug in the dongle in place of the keyboard note in this case the TV connection is usually only one or the other is active not both you will find if your TV HDMI is live it will use that and if not it will use the composite.

This better shows self powereing without HDMI

Normally these things have a button on the dongle and one on the keyboard you press the dongle first then the one on the keyboard and they sync with a flash on the LED. ;)

I have the same mini KB...just plug in the USB dongle to the Pi and switch on the mini KB on the edge in the upper left of the KB. You should see a solid green led if it is connected..and when you press keys a 2nd yellow led should blink. If it's not working...just unplug and replug the dongle (I have had situations on boot with the Pi where the cursor could only go about 1/3 of the way up the screen....I unplugged the dongle and replugged it..and it worked)
