256 MB SD card usable for RaspberryPI?

Sat Mar 23, 2013 8:56 am

Hello,

I have a 256 MB SD card and also a 1 GB SD card.
Is there anything I can use these SD cards for in combination with my Raspberry PI?

I'm asking this because the minimum size of SD card that are usable according to the website is 2 GB.

Please let me know what I could do with the SD cards and how.

Thanks,
Pieter

In theory they can work if they are compatible you would likely have to setup an SD Card move or copy the boot partition over to the smaller card and have the remainder on a USB storage.

yes they will work
but not with a full system
you should be able to boot to a usb drive root fs system or even bare metal with them

yes
you can use picore ( piCore- .img.gz or piCore-X- .img.gz )
or any other 'slimer' (shadyer) distro images (puppy? ect)

screen shot testing picore images on 2gb card
but only 37mb is used  :o and works/boots up fine 8-)

The other way (Which I used to do it on a 64mb MicroSD) is to use BerryBoot and tell it to install onto a spare USB stick. Bear in mind that you'll need a USB stick at least 2GB in size, preferably bigger. You could also set it up with a USB hub and add an external drive to that, giving you a phenomenal amount of drive space for something so small.

Just remember that the USB stick WILL be unusable in other machines, unless it's capable of reading a Linux partition. I would also recommend against using it in other linux machines as you might inadvertently corrupt a file. Keep the Boot SD card and the USB stick together.

I had DexOS booting from a 128MB card once...

edit: or it might have been a 32...
