Re: Best Cheap WiFi Dongle

Curious to any updates on this front - this thread is the highest ranked forum result on google for "raspberry pi WiFi dongle"

Pi Foundation has officially launched their own WiFi according to this https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/usb-wifi-dongle/, and it looks like it's awesome from the reviews here: http://raspi.tv/2015/new-official-raspb ... and-edimax

I'm particularly interested in the range of the device (IoT people... this is a huge issue!), and also the 'ad hoc' / infrastructure capability that'll make it possible for people to connect a raspberry pi to their own wifi network without needing to hook it up to the tv etc.

It's available online here: http://shop.pimoroni.com/products/offic ... ifi-dongle but that's only for the UK.

I can't seem to find it in the US yet.

There's more discussion here: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=48252, and it seems the latest news as of February this year here viewtopic.php?f=46&t=99111 so what's happening please?!

Adafruit had it; they're sold out at present but I expect it will be back. Put yourself on the waiting list. https://www.adafruit.com/products/2638
That's the one you want for MS IoT.

Thank you for the tip Douglas6!

Pity it's coming in at $12.95 on adafruit. I had hopes it'd be at their target of $5. Hopefully they'll make a giant batch and get the scale pricing.

Cheers!

Just received my batch of 4 adapters -- Airlink101 AWLL5088V2 Wireless N 150 Ultra Mini USB Adapter

Amazon Sold by: Platinum Micro, Inc. for $13.46 each with free shipping.

No USB HUB required, auto detected and it just works. Zero config (if you are happy with dhcp, for static IP config is needed)

Using the python speed test script it produces exactly the same speeds as the Ethernet (no surprise here both are USB) interface. Overall I am happy with it but yes it isn't a $5 dongle after all so it better does a good job...

If you are looking for 5Ghz, the TL-WDN3200 works great on my RPi2, $10 refurb NewEgg. Had it connected to my Belkin F7D8302 (Tomato) in minutes on 5Ghz, with 8MBps test both ways in iperf. I use a HiFiBerry Amp+ with a big 12V brick so I don't know if it might need extra power for others.
