Card will boot with raspbmc but not openelec or xbian

Hi,

My 8gb class 4 card works fine but I purchased a 16gb class 10 ( one that was on the wiki list of approved cards) and it works fine with raspbmc (and has provided a SIGNIFICANT performance boost--- from barely usable to very nice). However when i try to boot up with either openelec or xbian its as if the card is blank, the pi doesnt register it. Im using the same image writing / card prep procedures... Those 2 distros will boot with the 8gb card.

Any thoughts on how I can use the better card and openelec? Seems strange that it will boot with one system but not another. It would be one thing if it wouldnt boot with anything...

Id really rather use openelec over raspbmc...

Thanks!

Try formatting the new SD card and then imaging it. You may have to delete one of the partitions and then expand the other to fill the whole card before formatting. I've used the free EaseUS Partition Magic program to do that.

In Linux I use GParted to remove partitions, then create one FAT32 partition prior to DDing the .IMG

If you are using Windozy there is a Live CD http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, i used the raspbmc installer function to "make card formattable"or whatever ( makes it so the full space of the card shows in windows for formatting) and then formatted it in windows.

Im game to try your suggestions but what ought the proper partition structure look like? It sounds like im gonna need to manually create them.

Thanks!

Use the standalone Image http://www.raspbmc.com/download

"Standalone Image – If you just want a standalone image that can be booted without a network connection for initial setup, then you can get the latest image here. This image will resize your SD card partitions to use the full size of your card on bootup. This image should only be used as a last resort, say if you live in a rural area and are planning to download the image at work."

Thanks but its raspbmc im not having trouble with. I wonder if its not the installer changing the card in such a way that when i try to write the openelec .img (after restoring the card size amd formatting) theres something not right. Like u guys were saying about partitions...

On a freshly formatted sd card, what should the partitions look like?

I have the same problem.

Rasbmc (Autoinstaller) works but Openelec not!???

for Openelec i tried following methods:

- dd command, on OS X (sudo dd bs=1m if=~/Downloads/2012-10-28-wheezy-raspbian/2012-12-16-wheezy-raspbian.img of=/dev/rdisk1) The Terminal even says that its completely transfered?
- Raspberry PI SD Installer OS X, https://github.com/RayViljoen/Raspberry ... aller-OS-X
- RPi-sd card builder v1.2, on OS X
- Win32DiskImager, on WinXP

For both upper methods i used the unpacked image.

Please can u help us?
