twitch.tv / own3d.tv / other gaming livestreams

Sun Jan 13, 2013 8:44 am

I'm considering buying a Raspberry Pi, but as one of my most anticipated uses would be watching the aforementioned and other gaming livestreams on a TV, first I would like to know whether they work. Have any of you tried them? They're quite resource intensive, so I'm worried they might be too much.
If nobody has experience on this, I'd greatly appreciate if someone could just go to twitch.tv and see whether they can watch a random stream, and on what qualities (most popular streams have multiple choices).

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question but I couldn't figure out a better place for it. Please lock it and inform me on where I should re-ask the question if it isn't.

I got my Pi a few days ago and just recently connected it to a screen. I would also be interested in being able to watch livestreams using the Pi. However I fear it might not be possible or at least require some messing about. As the Pi is not very prone on running flash, I managed to get youtube running off the page with unwatchable quality.

You can download youtube videos however and watch them offline, I guess you could probably make the same solution to "live"streams if you download the VODs. But that would not be live of course.

I will try to look into this the best I can but I honestly doubt I will be able to solve it if nobody has a great idea in mind.

I've got another quick reply. I tried installing raspbmc (find more here: http://www.raspbmc.com/about/), it's one way to get xbmc to the Pi and it has a Twitch.tv plugin, I tried some streams and most streams seem to be running very well. I had a weird problem with a discoloured bar at the bottom on one of the streams however, it was not weird when I checked on my regular computer, so it's something in my Pi setup.

This does not fully satisfy me anyhow because I would want the perks of having an actual computer functionality from it as well. I will keep on trying to fix that issue by actually installing xbmc on arch linux or on raspbian. Before I leave I will give you these links as well.
