I can't mount my HDD

Thu Nov 12, 2020 11:37 pm

Hello,
I have a pi4 with a Mediasonic ProRaid 2 bay enclosure with 2 4tb WD NAS drives set to raid 1. I loaded Raspberry Pi OS Lite and installed Plex Media Server on it. I'm trying to mount the HHD but for some reason I can't get the FSTYPE or UUID or any other information on it other then the name being sda. Any and all help would be great

This is what I'm getting when I list all the disk partitions in CMD.

Code: Select all

sudo lsblk -o UUID,NAME,FSTYPE,SIZE,MOUNTPOINT,LABEL,MODEL
UUID NAME FSTYPE SIZE MOUNTPOINT LABEL MODEL
                                     sda 3.7T 1
                                     mmcblk0 59.5G
4AD7-B4D5 ├─mmcblk0p1 vfat 256M /boot boot

You don't get something like this?

Code: Select all

lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 1,8T 0 disk
└─sda1 8:1 0 1,8T 0 part /mnt/mydisk
sdb 8:16 0 3,7T 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 0 128M 0 part
└─sdb2 8:18 0 3,7T 0 part
mmcblk0 179:0 0 7,4G 0 disk
├─mmcblk0p1 179:1 0 256M 0 part /boot
└─mmcblk0p2 179:2 0 7,2G 0 part /
Who knows knows
Who doesn't doesn't

How did you load RpiOS-lite and Plex Media Server onto it?

I loaded RpiOS-lite using Etcher and a 64gb micro sd card. I then installed plex using CMD.

Ah, I thought you meant you had loaded them on the HDD.

From what you have shown so far, the HDD looks like it is partition-less? Perhaps you need to create a partition?

I already moved almost 1tb of media over. Is there a way to partition the drive and keep the full 3.7tb and not lose any of my data?

We've had something similar before a few months ago on the forum, i can't remember the outcome.

I've no idea that is your problem, being a raid drive I've no idea what the normal partition tools make of it.

the "RAID" showing up as sda only suggest there is no partition, and is not formatted...

how sure the OP has set the device as properly as RAID1 device?
how was the OP able to transfer files to the RAID1 device? what system was used?

can the OP show an image that there are files actually written on the RAID device?

have the OP tried setting up the device as a non-RAID unit and test if RPi can access that non-RAID device?

Image

how sure the OP has set the device as properly as RAID1 device? It has presets on the back of the ensclosure and is set to RAID1. Also when plugged into my laptop, anything moved to one drive also gets sent to the other drive. This is how I know RAID1 is working.

how was the OP able to transfer files to the RAID1 device? what system was used? I plugged the enclosure to my laptop and I'm able to move files over to it.

can the OP show an image that there are files actually written on the RAID device? If you look at the image above it shows that 885gb of my media has been transferred over.

have the OP tried setting up the device as a non-RAID unit and test if RPi can access that non-RAID device? I have not

ok... thanks for answering the questions...

but before trying to do a non-RAID setting...
can you post the result of

Code: Select all

lsusb
take note of the device ID
then look it up in

Code: Select all

dmesg
and see why its not loading
(better post here that part of dmesg)
"Don't come to me with 'issues' for I don't know how to deal with those
Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

Here is what comes up with Isusb

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 152d:0562 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Not sure what to search for in dmesg. A huge list comes up.

The only thing I see in dmesg that shows the HDD's is this.

Do you get any other messages about uas (or UAS) in the dmesg output?

The JMicron adaptors seem to have a problem supporting that and need a "quirk" in /boot/cmdline.txt to make them use the more stable, but slower usb-storage driver instead.

Does your disk show up with the "blkid" or "fdisk -l" commands?

Try adding the following to the beginning of the line in cmdline.txt with a single space after (before the rest of the line).

Code: Select all

usb-storage.quirks=152d:0562:u
That should disable UAS for that device and use the USB mass storage driver.

Not sure why but as soon I created a small partition(named dead space) it now shows up correctly and allows me the mount the NAS.

Code: Select all

NAME FSTYPE SIZE MOUNTPOINT LABEL MODEL
                                     sda 3.7T 1
                                     ├─sda1 16M
