Why doesn't Raspian have a system-wide dark mode?

Sun Oct 18, 2020 6:38 pm

While some programs would not support a dark mode, the fact is that some do, as evidenced by Ubuntu having a dark mode.
So why hasn't the Raspberry Pi Foundation added a dark mode to Raspian already?

It is probably a very low (almost non-existent) priority?
Dark mode on my iPad works for some apps and not others - altogether pretty poor.

Easy-peasy. You're looking to change your GTK theme.

Run this to launch a non-dumbed-down appearance settings program:

Code: Select all

lxappearance
You will find all sorts of settings in there, mouse pointers, GTK themes, window borders, custom colors, fonts, and much more.

PS: If you ever wanted your Pi to look exactly like a Windows 10 PC, check out my custom-made theme here.
Want to run Minecraft Java on your RPi? Easiest way is with Pi-Apps - just click Install.

Pi-Apps also includes Zoom, Visual Studio, Tor browser, Windows 10 theme, and 33 more.

If your unsatisfied then start over using the lite version of rpi os then install a desktop environment like cinnamon or mate for example
Running either Raspberry Pi OS desktop Full or Raspberry Pi OS MATE desktop
Overclocked at 2200MHz CPU and 700 MHz GPU with a over voltage of 7
Think before you delete something a stranger on the internet told you to.

LXDE was likely chosen as it is a fairly light weight and simple desktop. This made a lot of sense given the cpus in earlier Pis. The 3B+ does fairly well with a more robust desktop, and the 4B has no issues with most of the standard Linux desktops. I am not convinced about how a full blown KDE setup with all the eye candy would fair, but MATE and Cinnamon run very well. I don't particularly like LXDE, and only run it on my testbench Pi. All my desktop Pis run MATE.

Even within the confines of LXDE you can make the desktop much more visually appealing and certainly find lost of dark themes.

Thank you Botspot!

I was hoping LXDE has a dark mode theme for my raspberry pi 4.

I now changed it to dark mode per your suggestion.

I am happy now and I can now feel my eyes are not as strained as before.

Additionally, I think my pi is more responsive as well. Happy days. :D
