Wifi USB instead of Ethernet cable

Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:35 pm

Hi,

I am considering how to connect Raspberry Pi to internet. Unfortunately, I can't use ethernet cable. My router is too far in another room. Should I just plug in a Wifi USB to the RasPi or use a Wifi Access point with the cable? Or is there another solution for connecting the Pi without ethernet cable? Also how would I choose the right wifi and type in the password then? Is it possible to set it up it on the settings screen?

Thank you for every suggestion.

Not sure what raspBMC is or does or does not but I do know that the popular Raspbian Wheezy image supports many wireless USB adapters. Many of us use the Edimax EW-7811 successfully. You will still need to edit the file /etc/network/interfaces to input the proper settings for SSID and key. Search the forums or Google the internet for the applicable setup commands for your case. An alternative would be to buy a 50 or 100 foot ethernet cable on eBay just to get going.
