Beginner with Raspberry Pi. Experience with Proxmox and FreeNAS.
GOAL: make a NAS using Open Media Vault 5 that can hold at least 6 TB of storage
HARDWARE OWNED: Raspberry Pi 4b 8 GB, Argon 1 case, 16 GB SanDisk micro USD card, Vilros Pi 4 Compatible Power Supply with on/off Switch (5.1 V 3 A), Vilros Heatsink set (4 heat sinks)
QUESTIONS:
1. Will this OS and hardware work with a powered multi bay hard drive dock?
2. Recommendations for 4-8 bay hard drive dock for 3.5 HD’s and SSD’s?
3. ZFS, BRTFS, or neither? I worry about running either of these file systems on only 8 GB of RAM.
4. If ZFS is not viable, will my OS and hardware work with a hard drive dock that has external RAID?
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS:
1. Forum post saying that a hard drive dock is better than a SATA hat
2. Reddit post about installing ZFS on Ubuntu
3. Open Media Vault forum post discussing ZFS, BRTFS, and concerns that neither one is ready
4. Tech You Love tutorial on making a NAS with a Raspberry Pi 4 and Open Media Vault (states that project is experimental and might not work)
5. Ricmedia Tech Tutorial on building a Raspberry Pi RAID NAS server with flash drives
I remember reading that RAID does not work well with drives connected through USB cables, but I can’t find the post again. I also saw a lot of posts saying that you couldn’t do ZFS with drives connected through USB cables, but again, I can’t find them.
Thanks.
