Sense HAT + Argon One Case?

Sun Jul 19, 2020 11:15 am

Hello everyone,

I'm quite new to the whole Raspberry Pi community, so sorry in advance if that's a completely stupid question :)

I recently got my first Raspberry Pi 4, 4GB together with the Argon One case, since it seemed to be a good case for passive cooling, as I have the Raspi on my desk and didn't want any fan noise.

However, after having now played with it a bit, I wanted to get into additional addons for the Pi and found the Sense HAT interesting. But everywhere I looked, this Sense HAT is mounted directly on top of the Raspi, which would not be possible with this case.

Am I missing something, is there a possibility to use the Sense HAT (or any other HAT) together with any case at all and with the Argon One case in particular, or do I have to dismantle my setup every time i want to use a HAT?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers
Tolotos

Google for 40 pin GPIO extension, I'm sure you'll find something to suit your needs.

Something like this should work.

And if one additional hat isn't enough, try this.

Isn't there a magnetically-attached access panel on the Argon One case, revealing the 40-pin GPIO connector?

Yes, both for the 3b case and 4b case, easy access to the header but extension is likely required for hats.

Yes, but is there enough room to plug the sense hat in on top, and not block cooling openings etc?
Heat transfer from the Pi SOC to the Hat will mess with the sensor readings, especially temperature.

Yeah, I think your going to likely need a booster header for clearance.

Thanks for all your recommendations!
I think I'm gonna try the black hat extension mentioned by alphanumeric and will report back if it fits.

So the other option would be just the 40pin GPIO + booster header? Are there any benefits for one over the other?

The booster header is the cheapest option, but just be aware that any heat given off by the Pi is going to mess with the sensors on the Sense Hat. Especially the temperature sensor. Its been an issue for me, and a few others. Heat rises. ;)

Just stack one or more of these ? - a 2x20 male-to-female header:

or Germany: https://www.ebay.de/itm/232575164343

...or a right-angled version, if you want to avoid your hat being directly over the Pi:

This is I believe a match to the one that's already attached to the sense hat.

Double check the orientation of the gpio connector on the Argon one case before attaching the hat. Follow the legend. HATs will stick out the back instead of lying across the top of the case like you might expect.

If I use the booster header together with a cable to seperate the 2, there shouldn't be any temperature differences due to the heat of the case, right? The sensor is in the SENSE HAT itself, so if I understand correctly, it doesn't matter how hot the cable will get?

Correct (unless it gets so hot the cable melts -- but then you have other problems to sort out :o :( )

Be very careful using a ribbon cable, you can very easily reverse the GPIO pins and end up with Pin 1 connected to Pin 2 and vise versa. Especially if you try to use a female to female ribbon cable.
The mini black hat hack3r board sorts that out for you and will give you a stand for the hat. You can mount it to the board with stand offs etc.
