HDMI to VGA convert adapter. Will this work?

Mon Dec 31, 2012 5:12 pm

I have an older monitor and need a HDMI to VGA adapter. I know certain ones wont work.
Ii was wondering if this: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Input-Adapt ... B007KFVQXI

will work. It looks like it might.

The problem some people reported seems related to a power issue, in that the adapter draws too much current. Here's one that is tested with the Pi rev2 boards (albeit more expensive): http://www.newit.co.uk/shop/proddetail. ... ter&cat=13. It looks the same btw ;)

The two devices above are the same thing, just different colour cases. They both use the same chip. I have been using one of the black ones for over six months with no problems. However as mentioned elsewhere they both take more current from the HDMI port than it is designed to give so there is a small risk involved in using them.

There's a good list of adapters, success stories, caveats, and configuration settings at the RasPi Wiki:

Unpowered adapters may burn out diode D1, or your D1 may be strong enough to handle the power required by the adapter. Or D1 may fail by shorting out, in which case it will seem to work but may cause problems later if you hook up to another HDMI device.
