USB Audio Adapter for Zero W. How to get sound from it.

Mon Jun 15, 2020 1:45 pm

I just got one of these (not the official one) for the pirate radio and I will be using it so I can listen to it via headphones.

How do I enable this to work please?

I looked at a lot of stuff and all I am getting is how to change it from HDMI to 3.5mm jack.

Thank you.

Either you extract it using a few passive components
or use a DAC audio board designed for the RPiZW
Like the pimoroni pHAT DAC

Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

I do have it set up so I can listen to it via the built in speaker, however I just want to know how to enable the USB Audio Adapter in the desktop PI so I can listen to it via headphones.

I need to know the instructions please.

Thank you.

If you are running a fully updated Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian Buster) with Desktop you can use the Applet to change Audio Defaults:

Using a 2018 version.

You mean the bit on there where it says about creating a ".asoundrc" file?

Can USB Type-A work or must the adapter be the "C" version?

right click the speaker icon that appears in the top right of your monitor (just like the one shown above)
from there you should be able to see
Analog
HDMI
USB audio

select the USB audio

sometimes you may or may not need to reboot to have it activate.

It does matter, because the USB audio adapter must be supported in Linux.

Just right-click on the volume control on the right side of the panel, and choose your audio device.

The name of your audio device might be different from mine.

EDIT: updated picture.

My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Ah, the “white one that came with the pirate radio” where did that pirate radio kit come from?

Ah that kit looks like it uses Raspbian Lite so there won’t be any GUI to set the audio output device.

So you saying it won't work?

Haven't done it yet as waiting on something else that I ordered.

We appear to be going round in circles, mis-information rules, maybe this should clarify ?

Thank you.

It says latest version it auto picks it up and I am using (I think) as far as I remember, the last updated version of 2018. Does it auto pick it up in that version also?

Do yourself and for everyone elses sanity a favour and use the latest release of Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Buster) which was released June 2019....

It had to be from an old version (Raspbian Stretch 2018) as VLC doesn't work on most versions I tried, then once that was setup, I upgraded to latest version, Raspbian OS.
Done exactly what the instructions says on https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2019/ ... pberry-pi/

Still getting sound from the speaker and not in the headphones.

The image will give more info.

https://ibb.co/8K7M2F7

I selected them controls in the audio settings but nothing.
I know the device does work as it gives that sound when plugging in the headphones.

I've tried many other ways. The output is not muted.

Any ideas with the full commands please. Thank you.

Tried testing sound but nothing.

Also this:
Output stuck muted while Master is toggled
In setups with multiple outputs (e.g. 'Headphone' and 'Speaker') using plain amixer to toggle Master can trigger PulseAudio to mute the active output too, but it does not necessarily unmute it when Master is toggled back to be unmuted. [1] To resolve this, amixer must have the device flag set to 'pulse':

$ amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle

BUT...

ALSA lib control.c:1373:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL pulse
amixer: Mixer attach pulse error: No such file or directory
