Electricity question

Sat Mar 28, 2020 8:31 pm

So my RPi Zero is running on a normal iphone socket in my wall at about a constant 100% cpu usage with about 0.08 - 0.10 mbps (out).

What do you reckon the monthly cost of this would be?

42.

(Not knowing how much you pay for your electricity supply makes a serious answer impossible... )

Data rates are not particularly related to power consumption.

What you need to determine is the power draw 'at the wall'. That is, not merely the power required to run your Pi, but the power required to run the Pi, all the attached devices, if any, *and* the power required to run the PSU. Once you determine that, divide the rate you pay for power ($/KWH) by power needed in W. Adjust units as needed. Then multiply by the number of hours per year the system is operating (or just approximate it as about 9KHrs/yr) to determine the $/yr. It won't come to very much.

Edit to add...divide the annual cost by 12 to get the monthly cost.

Not really. What is the GBP/KWH rate?

But you have freedom to choose from multiple power companies, all of whom charge different amounts....

You need to check the tariff for your own provider.

Last time I did a bit of rough paper maths I got a rough number of about GBP£5/year. The Raspberry does more for fewer watt hours with the 4B, so still £5/year.

No problem with the answer to your post Switch all off in your house , Just leave the Pi powered up ,go on holiday
for three months , then check your electricity bill when you, get it, then you will know the cost

Don't forget to subtract the standing charge to leave only the cost of the electricity used by the Zero. :-)

Heres something to consider, the wattage.

A Pi zero uses what, 3 - 5 watts on average?
How much do you pay per kw/h? I pay about 22 cents AUD, which by a very rough calculation, puts my cost per year (8760 hours) at not even a dollar.

I've probably made a mistake on that.

Its closer to ten dollars, after checking with an online calculator, which is, as pointed out by Dougie, about 5 pounds

Getting a Pi0 to draw 1A would take some doing. What would you have connected to it? Personal experience is that a Pi0 with an attached 3.5" LCD panel draws a bit under 200mA, or just under 1W.
