Confusion regarding UK/US keyboard

Fri Mar 13, 2020 7:42 pm

I bought an official Raspberry Pi keyboard & hub and am just starting with a Raspberry pi 4.

The box for this suggests UK keyboard, along with the layout, so I stuck with this.

" is coming out as @
£ is #
# is "

This seemed to be US

So I changed to US in default keyboard - not sure what I was expecting to happen.

After reboot, exactly the same, so how do I get the default to reflect my keyboard ?

Image

I have attached a picture of the keyboard hub.

You must set the keyboard layout with the keyboard plugged in. Beware that the GUI and the console have differing places where their definitions are set.

Open an LXTerminal and run sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration and follow the menus (UK (105) with Windows key, QWERTY).
Then click the GUI preferences stuff and set the keyboard layout.

The "£@# are the keys that move.

Can't tell if your issue was fixed so here!
Sounds like your using the wrong keyboard layout so go the run and type

Code: Select all

rc_gui
then go to localisation and change your keyboard with the "Set Keyboard", then I would recommend Using:
Model: Logitech
Layout : English (UK)
Variant: English (UK)
then save it then the layout should be the exact same as on your official UK raspberry pi keyboard
Running Raspberry Pi OS Full, therefore my comments will be based on that
Using RPI-4B 4GB at 2.1GHz CPU and 700MHz GPU
don't format your sd because someone said so.

I'm guessing you're using something other than Raspbian here? Raspbian comes with the UK layout set by default and it automatically detects the layout of the official Pi keyboards.

nope I am using a full version of raspbian buster on the raspberry pi 4b, I always thought it came with us installed with whatever it detected and for some reason it thinks mine is a us keyboard but its not
Also sorry if your not replying to me

Getting a US keyboard even though you choose UK options and not US is an annoying 'bug' in the setup process.

Given that the OP (@Stain5) has not yet responded (or posted elsewhere) I'm getting suspicious and may lock this thread ...

Quite a few first time OPs never respond again, maybe they never find their posts again?

Would it help if the confirmation email for account activation included details how to use the forum and in particular how to find your own posts?

I started the post.

I am using Noobs and I used the Rc_gui to update the keyboard settings. Although I am the only user and am currently doing everything under the pi user, this resulted in PERMISSION DENIED, seemingly on all folders/files so I guess I must have missed a basic step in setting up.

Thank you for returning and responding. As has been indicated by others by default Raspbian, assuming that's what you selected for NOOBS to install, expects a UK keyboard and thus no changes are needed for it to work and, IIRC, neither for the NOOBS installer. Was NOOBS pre-installed to the uSDHC card or did you write NOOBS to the card yourself. If the latter you may find the new Raspberry Pi Imager tool easier to use:

For system level commands, when logged in with user permissions (e.g. pi), prefix the command with "sudo".

Just to clarify, this is a Raspberry Pi problem, not a user problem. I used Raspberry Pi Imager to get the latest Raspbian Buster. I plugged in the latest UK Raspberry Pi keyboard (the one with the integrated USB hub). I did not select the US keyboard in the setup. But the pi was configured for a US keyboard. It did not default to UK as promised. It did not auto-detect my UK keyboard. I am an experienced user and know how to correct it, it's just a shame that a new user could be discouraged when the first thing he/she tries to do fails.

Agreed the last time I installed Raspbian it chooses a US keyboard by default

I suspect a possible auto-detection issue. I've been testing the Pi version of the new imaging tool using it on a P3A+ to write Buster with Desktop (the tools default/preferred selection) to several uSDHC cards to try in several Pi's, including two really old ones (B1 & B2). I'm using a UK version of a mini-keyboard & track pad** and the installs have always default to UK and nothing w.r.t. the keyboard was, or needed to be, changed via the raspi-config gui. I don't have an official keyboard to check with and none of my collection have an "auto-detection" feature. It might be worth you posting the output of these commands for someone else with an official keyboard to compare with:

Code: Select all

lsusb
lsusb -t
usb-devices
Trev.
** https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_p ... eyPad.html
However, I sometimes use this: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_p ... yBall.html which is a US layout and have to change things accordingly.

@olivero & @gordon77 thanks for the info. AFAICT, so far, 04d9:0006 refers to the Holtek/keyboard/hub (RPI Wired Keyboard 1) combo. whereas 04f2:0963 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd (2.4G Multimedia Wireless Kit) which seems to be the keyboard/hub (HID devices) is "something else" possibly the similar device from the alternative manufacturer. AIUI there are two such, supplying different parts of "the world".

I am fairly sure my Raspberry Pi keyboard is genuine. It came in a pi4 desktop kit from the Raspberry Pi shop in Cambridge.

I am fairly sure my Raspberry Pi keyboard is genuine. It came in a pi4 desktop kit from the Raspberry Pi shop in Cambridge.
I didn't intend to imply it wasn't - IIRC Holtek are one of the manufacturers.

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
