X-Server on Arch Linux ARM

Fri Dec 21, 2012 11:21 am

Dear community,

I've tried to get a working installation of Arch Linux ARM on my RPi today, which confused me quite a bit.
Apparently, the image downloaded here is already 'installed', thus makes it impossible to follow the installation guide in the ArchWiki.
Also, while installing an X-Server kinda worked, there also seems to be no suitable graphic driver, thus trying to start the interface just got me the 'no display found' message.

Is there any (convenient) way to get a working copy of Arch Linux ARM with a working GUI on the RPi?

Arch is all about building your system, there is no image that I am aware of that comes with anything other than the base install. If you are following the archwiki, I would start at the bottom with "3. extra" in the beginner guide since most of the other stuff is already installed.

Thanks, you two :)
I somehow overlooked that subforum, sorry for that.
Surprisingly, I found a pretty detailed blog post on how to get a working desktop environment there.
Though LXDE, which that post is covering, is no environment I would've chosen myself, it seems to be worth a look when operating with the Pi.

Don't know if this will help but when i tried Arch i made a few notes and here is what i noted for getting XFCE to work.

"pacman -Syu" this performs a full system upgrade and will take some time.Note the S is a capital the others aren't.
"pacman -S xorg-server" Install the X server
"pacman -S xf86-video-fbdev xf86-video-vesa" install video drivers
"pacman -S xfce4" Install XFCE desktop
"startxfce4" to start the the GUI. When i did this it started on tty2 but did not automatically switch to it so i had to change manually "CTRL-ALT-F2". Note this takes some time to start fully the first time so be patient. On a later install the GUI appeared on tty1, not sure why.
Maybe someone will have better instructions but this worked for me.

Great post,

Thanks a lot for that. I'm installing XFCE as I type.

everything seems to be working as planned.

How do you install a display manager and XFCE4?

Thanks!

See Hiro's post above for 'pacman' commands.
