GIMP with hardware acceleration with Raspberry Pi 4B

Tue Feb 04, 2020 2:48 am

I installed GIMP on the Raspberry Pi 4 B. It’s pretty slow opening photos. I haven’t tried edit anything yet, but I’m not impressed so far.

GIMP has a setting for hardware acceleration. I turned that feature on but noticed no improvement.

I found an article about compiling OpenCL on Raspbian. Is this something that would enable hardware acceleration for GIMP?

Thank you.

VC4CL may not be.complete enough for GIMP. It also doesn’t run on Pi4, only earlier versions of the Pi. The author of VC4CL frequents these boards. This is the main VC4CL thread:

Opening a file has nothing to do with hardware acceleration. It has to do with the access speed and transfer rate of the storage medium. Try it again with your images on an SSD attached to a USB 3 port, instead of from an SD card.
