Pi4 how do we install apps on external drive

Thu Jan 23, 2020 12:54 pm

Since SD card has limited space, app has no room for data.
So I have a 500Gb drive but how to install app on drive?
Also, how do we get external drive to show up in File Manager when opened?
Could not find in docs or on board.
Any help is much appreciated.

Is the 500Gb drive going to be *permanently* attached?

It's bad practice to install apps on external devices in Linux. I see it being very infeasible to exceed 32 GB on just installed programs alone unless you're just trying to bork things on purpose.

Use external drives as "data" bearing disks only. If you're finding that /home/USER stuff is taking up a lot of data, move the user onto an external data disk or just give the user perms on a directory on the data disk.

Anyways, just don't try installing things from your package management (apt) onto an external drives, there's just too many problems you're going to run into.

Apps are generally associated with Android.

Debian uses Software Packages.

It can be difficult to split software packages between drives because of dependencies.

Move the root filesystem to the USB drive ...

Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

Yes, in this instance the drive will be permanently attached.

Surely we have to tell the system where the root file system is. Where would I find this in the docs?

If you want to do this yourself, here's a great tutorial: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 29&t=44177
