Installing Raspbian from bootable USB?

Tue Oct 15, 2019 7:03 am

Is it possible to boot Raspberry Pi 4 from a USB drive (either bootable linux or bootable raspbian) and be able to install it onto an SD card?

No. The Pi4B does not (yet) have a USB boot mode.

Even when Pi4 does have USB boot mode, why do you want to do this?

The raspberry Pi is not like an x86 desktop computer where you can install linux onto it from a bootable live Linux USB stick or CD.
Just put the SD card in a USB reader and write Raspbian onto directly on your PC with Etcher. Why do you want to put it onto a USB stick first and then copy it to the SD card?

The closest you can get to this use case at the moment is to install NOOBS-lite/PINN-lite onto the SD card and put the Raspbian installation files on a USB stick. That will allow you to install Raspbian onto the SD card without a PC, but you are still booting from the SD card, not the USB stick, but I'm not sure that matters if you are ultimately wanting to boot from the SD card.

Is there some reason you can't install it the recommended way (Raspbian image+Etcher or NOOBS)?

USB boot has not yet been implemented on the Pi4 (it will be added after network boot). But the installation procedure is the same in either case (if you can put Raspbian in a USB drive, then you should be able to put it on an SD card).

lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

What is the problem you are trying to solve?

Is this a bootstrapping 'Catch-22' where you need a working system to write the microSD card, but the only hardware platform you have is a non-working RPi board?

Can you beg or borrow about 20 minutes of access to someone else's workstation to allow you to write just one microSD card containing the Raspberry Pi Raspbian Buster Operating System? Because after that you can be independent.

@B.Goode: I am new to Raspberry Ecosystem and I am just trying to figure a way to install it. I am used to installing Linux from bootable drive, so figured it's probably possible to do the same with Raspberry. Thanks.

Give up the battle of trying to figure it out for yourself, and read the Raspberry Pi documentation instead: https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/

A Raspberry Pi board does not boot in the same way as a 'conventional' WinTel-style PC, so what you know from that environment is not directly useful. For 'deep dive' technical internals see https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... ootflow.md

The Raspberry Pi has no BIOS like a "conventional" PC / Laptop, so what you consider traditional methods will not work as you expect.

It is not unique to either the Raspberry Pi or Raspbian Operating System, many Single Board Computers function the same.

Raspbian is a fork of Debian ARMHF so it is not anything Linux-wise special.

Maybe it would be best to start by reading the excellent and informative Raspberry Pi Foundation website ?

Raspbian is simple to install from an image.

Go to: https://www.balena.io/etcher/, then download and install the Etcher image writing software.

Go to: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ to get the latest Raspbian image.
  • With desktop, or desktop and recommended software is best for someone new to the Raspberry Pi.
Use Etcher to write the image to your SD card directly from the .zip download (do not extract the image first).

That's it, your card is ready to use.
