Sound, DVI-D and HDMI questions

Hello

I have only recently got my new R Pi B
( 2 days ago ) which appears to work
quite well both generally and in the
online area etc..

As regards video I initially used my old CRT flat screen
style TV and the composite video out
which is OK for image display but doesn't cut it
for GUI usage generally as the text/fonts are a little
fuzzy/blurry ( the normal analog and digital TV
picture is quite sharp/crisp and has good colour ).
Some of the GUI image is also positioned off screen
around the borders.

So I need to move to a VGA converter ( extra $100.00 )
or DVI monitor or a HDMI display.

I have an LG Flatron thin screen LCD PC monitor
with VGA and DVI-D inputs.
I am assuming I can use a male to male HDMI
cable with the Pi and maybe plug this into
an DVI-D [male] to HDMI [female] converter adaptor ?
Will this work with the Pi ?

Also if usage of the HDMI output requires setup
in Linux first then using HDMI out appears fairly
complicated initially ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

I don't know that much about DVI but the DVI-D
input on my PC monitor looks like it is dual link
from the pin config. Would a DVI-D male plug
[single link] work with this DVI input as the pin config
for a single link DVI-D plug seems like it will fit
into the dual link socket it's just I don't know
whether this will work or not ?

Maybe it's just safer to buy a DVI-D dual link
adaptor ( DVI-D to HDMI that is) and be done with it.

Also how do I test the standard audio output on the Pi ?
Is there an app I can run and what about Linux settings for sound etc.. ?
I thought the python games would produce some sound but
after plugging in some head phones I got no sound.

Is the standard audio disabled when the HDMI out
is active ? If I use the HDMI to DVI-D video approach
for Pi use on my PC monitor then I will get no HDMI sound
either as my monitor has no speakers inbuillt.

So if I use HDMI to DVI-D video then how do I get sound to work
on my Pi ?

HDMI to DVI-D is a simple cable interface. You can use either a HDMI > DVI-D Cable or a HDMI Cable with a HDMI to DVI-D adapter at the Monitor end.

I use this in my setup.

FozzyBear, For Sound, you simply use the Audio out socket to either your Monitor if it has Audio ... or to your Amplified Speakers.

hello bn01rnh

Yes I bought one and yes it works.

I am using a male HDMI to male HDMI cable which plugs
into a female HDMI to male DVI-D [dual link] adaptor.

If you are plugging into a DVI input ( on PC monitor
etc ) make sure you check which kind of DVI
input you have i.e. mine is DVI-D dual link.

Check up DVI on wikipedia which shows all pin configurations
for different DVI plug types.

cheers

As longs as its not DVI-A it should work, dual link or single link doesn't matter, but DVI-A is just VGA with the DB-15 connector replaced with one that resembles a DVI connector, but only carries the VGA (analog) signals.
