The USB connector is designed for thousands of plug-unplug cycles, so it's highly unlikely you will ever wear one out.
I also don't want to leave it idling either as that's just wasting power.
In that case you need to turn off power from the AC/mains to the PSU power brick (disconnecting power from the Pi itself will not stop the PSU from consuming a tiny amount of power if the power brick is still plugged in). Either unplug that, or use a switch (I use outlet "tap" switches similar to the ones LTolledo posted).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
