fun idea pi4 as a gpu?

Thu Jul 11, 2019 3:08 am

Hey, so just a weird thought and maybe not the best use of a pi4 but ...

I have seen several basic sub $10 usb2 vga adapters floating around ebay and similar sites that got me thinking with pi4 having a pretty fast usb3 connection now, in theory would it be possible to have the pi4 emulate a usb 3 gpu?

I would think it would be possible, but it might be difficult to do if software that does that doesn't already exist. You would also need to find a way to get the pi to act as a USB slave rather than a USB host.

The power port can be configured as USB client, but it's only USB 2. You can't configure the USB 3 ports (or the main USB 2 ports, for that matter) to be clients because there is an intervening chip acting as a hub.

It should also be possible to turn a Pi Zero into a USB DisplayLink adapter and a Zero is much better suited than a Pi 4B for that task, being $10 rather than $35, only needing power from a PC USB socket not a separate 3A supply,. That has been discussed but it's never happened.

It would be great if it did happen for a Pi 4B, especially if that can be back-ported to a Zero. Having two 4K HDMI outputs may be a catalyst for that. But I don't hold much hope.
