Raspberry pi 4 sold out?

The Raspberry Pi 1 - Sold out for a long time after release
The Raspberry Pi 2 - Sold out for a long time after release
The Raspberry Pi 3 - Sold out for a long time after release
Raspberry Pi Zero & Zero W - Still a limit of 1 and was very sold out at release.
The Raspberry Pi 4 - Sold out at release.

My suggestion for the Raspberry Pi Foundation is make like 10x the amount you THINK you need up front. It's cat and mouse with these devices.
I'd gladly plop down many hundreds of dollars right now for several 4GB Pi 4's but there are none to be found. :(

Some on eBay U.K. already

Given this did not exist yesterday (unless you had one if the samples) I have to ask is this a solution looking for a problem  or is it a FOMO issue  :D

Edit: Sorry 2Gb

I imagine it's not as simple as "make 10x as many on launch"
They can only make so many at a time, making ten times as many would take ten times as long, delaying the launch and possibly straining the budget (making them isn't free, some profits from sale of boards must go toward making more)

Warehouse space: its not infinite nor free.

I don't recall having much trouble getting the Pi 3B or 3B+ models shortly after launch. :?

However, with the Pi4 what I've seen are resellers bundling them, trying to force early adopters to buy a lot of junk they don't need, and making those who want only the computer itself wait (ship dates for bundles are a few days out, while bare boards are weeks or unknown). :(

I seem to recall this was the situation with the Pi Zero as well.

Itls a tradeoff. How much money is available, how much storage space you have, how many you think you need, defining a launch date months in advance.

And throw in the typical problems in production ramp up, and it all gets a bit difficult.

We didn't make as many as we wanted. but production is running full tilt now, and the commercial team is working hard to distribute the batches in the fairest way possible.

It is not sold out, there is still 2GB version here https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b
If you want specific RAM size only then please rename topic title.

BTW, 2GB was my preferrred model so yesterday I ordered that one immediatelly, looks like I am a minority, everyone wants 1 or 4GB :-)

My usual supplier only had the 4B1 left, others due early July.
Not only a new Pi but 3 versions had to be made and shipped out around the World.
I suppose some suppliers might have only got the versions they thought would sell?

With some forward thinking it could have been announced earlier and fanboys could have gone to the Pi store and queued up overnight.
That might have made the news Worldwide?

bommerman,
My suggestion for the Raspberry Pi Foundation is make like 10x the amount you THINK you need up front.
Nice idea, for us. Let's think this through...

I see a number of problems with your idea:

1) The Pi factories can only make so many Pi per day. If all that production were switched to a new model prior to launch then there would be no production of existing models during that time. That means nothing to sell in that time. That means no income. That is bad.

2) Your suggestion requires increasing the delay between finalizing a new model design and launching it for sale. Time to make that "10x" amount. We would have had to wait longer for the Pi 4 launch. That is bad.

3) Making 10x of stuff just to hoard until launch means holding on to stock until launch for longer. That increases storage and other costs. That's bad.

4) There is the risk that having made 10x, more than expected demand the device is flop in the market, nobody buys it, you have wasted a lot of money and time on building the. That's bad. You have lost income due to 1) above. That's bad.

All in all a bad idea to over stock prior to launch.

If just looking at getting something better at the same price then the 1GB makes sense, but I would have thought an extra 1GB for $10 or an extra 3GB for $20 would lead people to choosing 4GB. Plus getting the most one can is insurance against finding one needs more in the future than initially thought.
1GB is almost but still not enough as proven with current 3B+. 4GB is ~60% price increase over base model. So 2GB is cheapest one with twice the memory which may be enough.

I don't want to pay extra for insurance :-) In case 2GB proves to be not enough I will buy 4GB one second time and current one will definitely not go to waste.

In our testing, we came up with this.

Headless - 1GB
Desktop - 2GB
Big compiles/development - 4GB

That makes sense.

1GB .. Robots, NAS
2GB .. Educational desktop, test box
4GB .. Dev box, desktop

I tend to keep a lot of tabs open, and prefer a 55" 4k tv for a monitor, or two 1080p monitors, so the dual micro hdmi with 4k looks great to me.

With a USB3 SSD a 4GB Pi 4 will be a quite capable box.

Reading over this thread, it appears to me that some people are Unclear on the Concept of who it is, exactly, that pays for and accepts the pre-launch boards. As I understand it, that is NOT the RPT. It's RS and Premier-Farnell. So while the RPF/RPT might well be deciding the general board mix, and getting things set up and rolling, it's those two companies that are paying for the boards to actually get made and storing the launch day supplies.

I think you may have under estmated the call for the 4GB version - it'll be the prime one for a desktop - most people will buy it because we all know how software continually grows in size. 8-)

The 4 gig model is the one I want and its out of stock at the usual places I buy from. I'm not at all interested in buying a kit with extra stuff I don't need or want so I'll just have to wait it out until new stock arrives. :x

Newark/Element 14 is now showing expected ship dates for 4GB model (for USA).

Available for backorder to lead times shown
  • 1,500 Further stock expected to ship on 7/4/19
  • 1,500 Further stock expected to ship on 7/9/19
  • 1,500 Further stock expected to ship on 7/11/19
  • 1,500 Further stock expected to ship on 7/15/19
  • 1,255 Further stock expected to ship on 7/21/19

That's for just the board (no kit). I already have a couple on back order. Tried to order the official PSU as well, but for some unknown reason adding the $8 power supply to my order increased the shipping charges by more than $10. So for now I'll use something else (I have a few 5V/3A industrial power supplies and the older 2.5A official PSU).

I'll be using my open sided acrylic JBTek case for one, and the new Flirc for the other (also pre-ordered).
