First generation:
Setup the RP-3b with a Linux version of OpenMediaVault modified for use with RP. Available @ openmediavault.com. Initial setup was using two USB 2.0 flash drives for storage and a standard micro SD card for booting. Followed instructions from the OMV forum for initial setup. Ethernet connection was run through a standard 'switch'. System worked fine and was reasonably 'fast'. Understand this is a 'test bed' and not intended for serious NAS applications. Potential issue was heat caused by the power draw by the two USB flash drives.
Second generation:
Acquired two inexpensive 120Gb SSD drives from a local computer store and replicated the initial setup. To lessen the heat generation issue, I used a powered 4 port USB hub connected to the RP and adaptors on the SSD drives plugged into the USB hub. Worked like a charm. Transfer to/from an existing FreeNas server and/or other network machines was perfect including wireless. Speed was significantly better with the SSD drives but hampered by the ethernet connection speed.
"Shared folders" were setup in OMV with SMB/CIFS
Once a suitable enclosure scheme is developed and finished I'll use the unit on relative short out of town trips for convenience.
