HDMI to VGA Cable - does it work

Mon Nov 26, 2012 12:23 pm

I see this cable on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDMI-Male-SVGA- ... =8-4-spell and I'm wondering if it will work on my Pi?

There are a lot of reviews saying that it doesn't work, but none are Pi specific. It appears to be for X Boxes and such like, giving an HDMI output and needing to connect to a VGA monitor.

I have a 17" Tv that has composite and CGA inputs. I'm trying composite just now and it's like the old days of my ZX-81 and Spectrum, unfocussed and not at all pleasant to my aged eyes! I would like to try this TV on VGA but with various adaptors cosing £15 or so, I'd rather not waste any (more) money!

If anyone knows if the cable at £3.62 inc postage will work on a Pi, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Cheers,
Norm.

I suppose it's a cable used for a very specific purpose and for very specific systems, for instance when a laptop has a hdmi socket that could be reconfigured to send analog vga on a non standard way on its pins. So it's not useable with the Pi

From the description it's easy to see that it doesn't have a digital-analog converter inside and it's just two plugs with wires in between. Won't work.

This one is tested by the shop with the rev2 boards: http://www.newit.co.uk/shop/proddetail. ... ve_Adapter

Thanks poing, I didn't think it would work myself, given the D->A thing, but I couldn't see whay there would be a cable of this kind for sale, but it appears that some devices output VGA signals on an HDMI connector, hence this cable.

Looks like I need a converter box, as suspected.

Cheers,
Norm.
