Create Desktop Shortcut to Network Folder

Thu Mar 28, 2019 6:13 pm

Hi. Our raspberry devices connect to a network NAS device. I connect by going through File Explorer. How can I make a desktop shortcut to this folder: smb:/storage1.local/public on storage1.local/Digital Files

Thank you!

Navigate to the folder using filemanager then left click drag to the desktop.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Yes, I got the same error message. I created a desktop icon that works except that I can't get the raspberry to remember the username and password. They have to be r-entered after each reboot:

[Desktop Entry]
Name[en_US]=Digital Files
Comment=Connect to the QNAP
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/openbox.png
Exec=pcmanfm smb://storgage1.local/public/
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=False
Categories=None;

I posted a question about keeping the username and password. I hope someone has the answer. God luck!

Found a solution. I had to look at the mount command for our network share in the /etc/fstab file. That command pointed to a file: /.smbcredentials. In that file were the username and password needed to set up and keep a connection to our network device across reboots.

In our case, the username and password had been changed. So when I updated those fields, we rebooted and access to the network device was set correctly and stayed set across any more reboots.

Hope this is useful.
