Raspberry Pi b - mobile gateway ?

Hi

I've got a PI b with an older version of raspbian installed.

I followed this guide

And from the PI I can get online using my mobiles 4g via USB, but when I connect my laptop to the PI's LAN port the laptop can't get on line.

The PI has a static IP of 192.168.1.253 and I've set that as the default gateway on my laptop. From the laptop I can't ping the PI..

Can anyone point me in the right direction.. or provide a link to a guide to do this on an older PI.

Does the laptop ethernet port have a static IP too?
Run ipconfig /all in a command window on the laptop to check.
