Can this portable power solution work?

Tue Nov 20, 2012 8:53 pm

Hi guys, I have recently become a big fan of the Raspberry Pi and I have conjured up an interesting project I would like to do. The only problem I have currently is how to power the Pi without plugging it into a wall. I have read in a few places that an external portable power source can be used, but nowhere have I seen an easy solution. I found this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008 ... =computers

And wondered if the Pi could be plugged into that to power it? It comes with a USB to micro-USB adapter so the Pi can obviously plug into it, I just don't know if the power output is suitable or will it fry my Pi? I don't want to spend any money on this before knowing if it works because my project is not cheap anyway, and I am a 16 year old student :P Any help would be great, if you need to know more, just ask. Thanks.

Should be fine for you RPi. The key bit of info is this:

4 x USB Output: 5V 0.6A ~ 2.1A,

The RPi needs 5V @ 700mA (0.7A) or more. The above line seems to indicate it can power up to a total of 2.1A spread across the 4 usb ports.

The answer to the next question is: Probably somewhere between 12 and 20 hours, you will just have to try it and see :) It looks like a pretty nice device.

Ok So could you 'power' a powered USB hub with this also. I don't understand how to make this work. Like how would you get an AC wall plug to be powered from this?

You do not get AC power from this. It is probably best to just say it will power things that typically get their power from a USB port, your RPi, a cell phone, a tablet, etc.

It essentially is a powered USB hub, it is just powered from its own internal battery instead of by a plugged in wall adapter like a 'real' powered usb hub.

This item appears to be charged via a usb cable so it is not a "true" powered usb hub in the sense it plugs into the wall.

Thanks bgirardot for the information

I guess I'll go ahead with it and post back if it works, hopefully then I can add this as a portable power solution on the forum page for absolute beginners. Thanks again.
