Official repository - hostapd not found

Sun Jan 06, 2019 10:00 pm

Hi all,

I've just installed the latest Stretch ( Version 4.14 - Just Desktop i.e without the recommended software ) and I'm trying to create a hotspot.

Done the updates and upgrades.

I was able to install dnsmasq without any issues, but when I try hostapd I get "Unable to locate package hostapd"

Please could I ask someone to verify that its not currently there ?

I am using the standard pre configured sources list:

deb http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ stretch main contrib non-free rpi
# Uncomment line below then 'apt-get update' to enable 'apt-get source'
#deb-src http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ stretch main contrib non-free rpi

Thanks,

Your output from policy looks the same as mne, but hostapd seems to be available in mine

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ apt-cache policy hostapd
hostapd:
  Installed: 2:2.4-1+deb9u2
  Candidate: 2:2.4-1+deb9u2
  Version table:
 *** 2:2.4-1+deb9u2 500
        500 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian stretch/main armhf Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
(You don't need sudo to run apt-cache commands as they are purely informational).

Thanks for checking

There are a surprising number of posts on various sites regarding this same problem and it always seems to mysteriously fix itself.

The fact that I was able to install dnsmasq without any issues, leads me to believe that my settings are all correct.

Ive been trying for a couple of days but will keep at it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks

This is definitely going to come up again so here is a brief description on what I did to fix it.

I checked one of my other Pi's and that one loaded the hostapd file no problem. I checked its sources file and it was different to mine ( Which was as I downloaded it )

So to edit the file its: sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Comment out the standard line like this:
#deb http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ stretch main contrib non-free rpi

Add this line:
deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ stretch main conttrib non-free rpi

Then do:
sudo apt upgrade
and
sudo apt update

After this I was able to load hostapd
