Some basic questions, USB angle and screw size for mounting

Fri Nov 09, 2012 1:10 pm

Hello! I hope i've got the correct forum for my questions.

I just ordered my Pi few days ago and i have an idea to build it into a ice cube lamp i have just standing at home. I have been modding the plastic base of the lamp, cutting out an area so the board fits but it is still going to be very space constrained so my first question is how is the micro usb jack angled on the board?
I'll have to buy an angled cable (option 1 or option 2) and the cable needs to be going upwards when connected so i'll need to make sure i get the right cable depending on how the usb jack is mounted.

Second question is what size is the mounting holes on the board? I'll have to find some screws and nuts to be able to secure it to the plastic.

Regards

You might want to wait until you get your Pi so you can test fit it: Measure once, cut twice. ;)

I've printed a 1:1 scale model of the board, so fitting it is all good.
I just need to figure out what usb cable to get and what screws+nuts to get for mounting it.
Drilling the mounting holes i will obviously wait with, but i'd like to have as many peripherals fixed before i get it.

The microUSB connecter is mounted pretty much flat on the board. If you carefully remove the outer heat shrink from the end of a microUSB cable, you can make it much more flexible. Not sure if that'll help in your situation, just a though.

What i'm after to figure out is if it's mounted /¯¯¯¯¯\ or \¯¯¯¯¯/ so i can buy the correct cable making the cord go upwards :)

Its the latter of the two possibilities.

The photo given above is practically unusable, this one is better.

Yup. I can verify with my Pi, the long side is facing up, the rounded side is facing down.

Thanks people, i found that picture as well and then looked at the official sketch and got confused: http://www.raspberrypi.org/wp-content/u ... o_Blue.png
So then i know which usb cable to get!

This page: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/tag/mounting-holes says the screws are M2.5, i guess that should be correct so i'll need to find where to get those. Sadly screws from pc motherboards are another dimension because i had a few of those lying around.

If your installation is that tight you may want to consider powering from the gpio pins.

Hmm, interesting, didn't know that was possible.

http://elinux.org/RPi_Low-level_peripherals be aware that this bypasses the input fuse, best practice would be to put some sort of inline fuse into the supply wiring, with that said I power this way with no fuse but I am well aware of the risks.
