Is it possible to save pictures from a USB camera to an external hard drive or USB using a Raspberry pi 3?

Specifics depend on your hardware but in brief:
  • Mount the external HDD somewhere on your filesystem. The desktop GUI should do this automatically for you.
  • Run your camera software and save to the mounted HDD
Attempts to contact me outside of these forums will be ignored unless signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public enquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters

There is a good tutorial here which would get you started.

You could then set-up a cron job to copy the images to a external drive.
