Can be done, it is it Ok ? Can't tell you because it depends on the interface and the power supply.
If it is an USB attached HDD and the official power supply for your RPi then there should be no problems.

What makes you think it won't work?
My two Raspberries with 300GB drives work fine. The only requirement is an external power supply for the drive.

Shouldn't be any problem. I've got three Raspis (2B, 3B and 3B+) running 2TB 2.5" USB drives with just the official power supply.

I've got 2.5" 2TB Seagate HDD running on my RPi1B+ now, as a storage drive (not a boot drive). The HDD is in a SATA to USB3.0 HDD case

and just last weekend, I booted the latest Raspbian Stretch on an RPi3B+ using a very old 3.5" 250GB HDD housed in a very old 12v powered HDD case...

as the saying goes "...if there's a will ....there's a way..."
