Is my raspberry Pi accessible from the internet with xrdp?

Tue Jun 26, 2018 8:30 pm

Hey guys,

I am using my raspberry Pi with owncloud and plan to enable a mail server too, which both schould be accesible through the internet, which means to enable port forwarding (for certain ports). As of now, my PI always sits next to my normal computer, so it is inside my local network.

For sercurity concerns, is it possible to reach my Pi via rdp from the internet, which would require me to take additional steps to secure the connection or is it enough to let it stay as it is?

Do I need to enable firewall and fail2ban, or are they measures you only need to take when enabling ssh?

I would look into using RealVNC instead which is already pre-installed in Raspbian. It is more secure and IMO much better than xrdp. If you sign up for their free cloud service then you can access your RPi from anywhere without having to do any port forwarding.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

It depends on which ports you're going to open on your router for incoming traffic. If you don't open a port for incoming connections your Pi should never see the attempts.

I just plan to open port 443 and whichever port is necessary for a mailserver. And I am fine with just having remote access to my pi from my home network.

So the answer is, as long as I dont open ports which is used by xrdp, i will be fine? I dont know which port exactly it would be, but i think it's somewhere near 3000.
