[SOLVED] Deleted pre-installed apps, can't see text now!

Tue May 22, 2018 1:40 pm

So I deleted preinstalled apps like Wolfram and Minecraft to free up some space. Then I went a little hog wild and deleted stuff from the programming section of the start menu (Bluej, Python, Geany, et all), libreoffice, epiphany... and now I have no text on anything. Menu buttons are blank, desktop icons are just icons with no text, files/folders are just icons with blank text. Any idea how to fix this? I obviously deleted a program that manages text/fonts but I don't know which one. Please help!

how did you delete these apps ??
did you use the package-manager, or did you remove them by hand ??

sudo apt-get purge [app_1] [app_2] [app_n]
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

I read online it saved like 1+ gigs to remove Libre Office and Wolfram. I just searched for most of the apps in the start menu and added them to the list. So everything in the "games" section and "programming" section I removed. I wanna say removing all the programming apps caused this?

not sure, but quite a few programs need Phyton in order to run.
it could very well be that depencies are no longer met.

Do you know the command lines to get the necessary python program/dependencies back? I know I got rid of Python 3.5 and Python 2.7. I know it was 2 different python apps - the number are just from memory but could be wrong. I think those were them.

not sure, I would go for "sudo apt-get install phyton"
there are also options, to fix broken dependencies.
you might read this:

Removing unwanted apps has always worked for me without any unexpected side effects so maybe you did just pick on a bad app to delete.

Perhaps start with a fresh install and purge them one at a time until you find what breaks things, or be a little less vigorous in what you get rid of. You don't need to remove everything, just getting rid of the bigger apps will recover a lot of space. I think I just delete Wolfram, Libre Office, Sonic Pi, Minecraft and Java these days as the bigger hogs. You can keep apps but remove their menu links.

I would recommend keeping both Pythons and Perl 'just in case' but you can remove the IDLE and other IDE's.

You could use a larger SD Card so what is 'wasted' isn't that great. Or start with Raspbian Lite and add what you need rather than taking away things you don't want.

I installed Python2.7, Python3.4, and Python3.5 with sudo apt-get install
I also tried all the flavors or apt-get to fix stuff with -fix-broken and even update/upgrade with dist-upgrade too.

I have text/names back on folders and most of the menu buttons, but still desktop icons have no text and I opened the system calculator and all buttons are blank/empty still as well. Maybe that will help?

Anything else you can think of to get python back or rebuild broken/missing dependencies or whatever would cause text/names/numbers to not show like this?

you could try "sudo apt-get install -f"
this should fix broken dependencies.

Still nothing. Is it worth noting my app says "Galculator" not "Calculator" maybe my language or something got messed up?

Seems to be an app bug / feature rather than anything you have done. It says "galculator" on my working Pi 3B desktop, also in the app's "Help/About" pop-up.

Any way to tell what Calculator is built on/written in so I can check on those dependencies? So what is weird is I have tool tips just all the buttons are blank. I've also tried all the advice here so far as well as rebooted my Pi after each try

you could do a reinstall
it is one of the available options of apt-get

example: sudo apt-get install --reinstall aptitude

Will that remove any other files I have on the Pi? Also, what would the command line be? I'm VERY new to this (and once fixed I won't delete/purge anything ever again)

Galculator is the correct name, also according to the site of the developer.
the command line would be sudo apt-get install --reinstall galculator
headless RPi 3B running from usbhdd.

Tried that. Still blank buttons on the calculator. Is there anything else I should try and reinstall like python or [something else]? I did already do sudo apt-get install pything2.7 and again for python3.5 and at that point I got folder names back but still no text on desktop icons and menu buttons are blank/empty still (even on calculator after reinstall and reboot).

Man, I really messed this up. Really hoping we can solved this without having to reflash my SD card. I used it as a NAS for a little while so I have a ton of stuff I'd have to copy off of it.

you removed everything through Terminal command lines.
use the command "history", which gives you the last 2.000 commands you used.
so, you can find what you have removed through these commands.

I purged:
  • wolfram-engine
  • sonic-pi
  • scratch
  • minecraft-pi
  • python_games
  • libreoffice*
  • dillo
  • geany
  • nodered
  • bluej
  • greenfoot
  • nuscratch
  • claws-mail
  • idle-python2.7
  • idle-python3.5
  • python3-thonny
  • epiphany

I reinstalled them all but claw-mail and wolfram-engine (I know, I'm an idiot for purging some of that python stuff) and rebooted. And now Raspberry Pi doesn't want to turn back on. CRAP!!!

looks like you have to start over, from the beginning.
and if you have to remove apps, use the command "remove" or use the Package Manager.

Still blank buttons on the calculator.
For those of us who can still read the About text it says it's built on GTK+ ( which probably explains the "G" in its name ), so if you have lost a graphics dependency that could explain things.

Open a Terminal; is the stuff there readable ? Even if not there are ways to still get at your data, even if it might involve some 'typing blind'.

I would say; don't panic, don't reinstall. Get another card, put this one safely to one side. Get your files back at leisure.

It is a good practice to have an extra µSD card and keep a backup copy of your boot µSD card. You can create one using the SD card copier program that is part of the desktop.

Why don't you start with the Lite version of Raspbian and just install a GUI?

Seems like a lot less headache than removing a ton of stuff. To install the Raspberry Pi Desktop, I believe you install raspberrypi-ui-mods. So image your card with Raspbian Stretch Lite, fully update/upgrade it, then install the Raspberry Pi Desktop.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install raspberrypi-ui-mods
You could even pick a different Desktop/GUI if you prefer something else (Mate, Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE) although the Rpi Desktop is one of the lightest I have used (they really did a great job of optimizing it).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

the origin of the problem was a lack of space on the SD-card.
and there seems to be some knowledge of using Terminal.
so, I would use Lite and not install any GUI.
