64 bit os for RPI 3 B+

Sat May 12, 2018 4:27 pm

Hello!
I'm the owner of a Raspberry Pi 3 B+. I wanted to run a program on it which requires a 64 bit system but then I ran into trouble because it turned out that my os (Raspbian) is a 32 bit one.

Since this is my first Raspberry Pi and I've never compiled kernels or similar I'd be glad if anybody could point me towards an easily understandable tutorial to setting up a 64 bit Raspbian, or if not possible Debian, installation on a RPI.
Also I'm concerned about how this would affect updates. Would my Raspberry Pi stop getting them if I change to 64 bit unofficially?

Thank you very much in advance.

When you state 64bit are you actually refering to a program / software which is for x86-64 CPU Architecture ??

The Raspberry Pi 3B+ has an ARMv8 CPU Architecture, so can run either ARM32 or ARM64 OSes..

The Officially supported OS is Raspbian ARMHF ARM32 compiled for ARMv6 / ARMv7 instruction set.

There are various ARM64 OSes each has their own developer support.

Are you also aware that there is a big difference between x86 64 bit software and ARM 64 bit software? If software is just advertised as 64 bit, it usually means x86_64 which only runs on PCs and Macs.

The program is written in php so I assumed as long as I could successfully build php on a 64 bit rpi, it would be fine.

There is RPF Raspbian Stretch documentation which includes PHP install:

PHP is a scripting language (so word length doesn't matter), there's a 32-bit version (PHP 7.0) available for you to install on Raspbian Stretch.

Thanks for the answers, but as I said I'm required to have a 64 bit system and php installation.

Then you will need to find alternative hardware (like an Intel Nuc) or see if you can work with the exceedingly experimental AARCH64 code on your Raspberry.

Then the Raspberry Pi is not suitable as it has an ARM CPU.

I don't understand for a moment why you need a 64-bit Operating System to run a PHP script.

But simply taking your question at face value, have you seen this extensive forum thread: viewtopic.php?f=54&t=188448

Warning: it is neither Raspbian nor Debian, nor is it fully debugged and stable so probably not useable other than for experimentation.

Regarding updates: Updates are applied to a specific version of an Operating System running on your RPi. They do not affect the RPi board itself which resets to a factory-fresh state every time it is powered on. If you stop running Raspbian, the support and updates for Raspbian will no longer be relevant.

Edit: followed the non-obvious link to the pmmp site where the requirement is specified. It looks as though the developer/maintainer did not have anything other than 'Wintel' x86-based hardware in mind. So searching for a 64-bit OS or implementation of PHP for your RPi are probably not going to help in your aim of running pmmp.

The software the OP is wanting to use has been compiled to run on x86-64 CPU, it is more than just PHP...

PHP 7.2 64-bit with the extensions needed for PocketMine-MP

Got that now...

Would be so much easier to be given the whole picture from the outset...

Thank you so much! After installing Gentoo I was able to install php and run pmmp. I'm glad it worked out eventually.

Do I have to mark this thread as "solved" or anything?

As far as I know it doesn't
