Raspbian has xrdp in repository:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xrdp

Though xrdp conflicts with Raspbians included RealVNC, so you will need to completely remove.....

RealVNC is already installed in Raspbian and is much better than RDP.
Enable VNC by interfaces menu in sudo raspi-config or GUI config tool then reboot.
Install viewer app for Windows from here: https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/viewer/
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Stretch w/ Desktop OS.

Given the resolution issues with VNC, did anybody find out why xrdp can't be located ?

OK, I'm going to answer my own question.

Despite having run it no more than 20 minutes ago, I had to run 'apt-get update' again before apt would find and install it.

Having installed it, the resolution is good as ever which blows away VNC, and I confirm that I didn't have to uninstall anything on Stretch.

yes i have some too: working headless, and
with RASPBIAN Desktop / boot to CLI
and no HDMI connected
it is required to run sudo raspi-config and adjust the resolution [7 advanced options ][A5 resolution][?DMT mode 35]

An additional sudo apt update is required after.... even immediately after..... the latest upgrade. After doing that once then it should work as before.
There is no resolution problem with RealVNC. However if there is no HDMI monitor attached then the settings revert to composite resolution. To fix that the force hotplug and resolution group and mode must be set in config.txt. You can use sudo rasp-config or the GUI config tool to do that.
IMO RealVNC is far better than xrdp.

What resolution issues?

Try adding

Code: Select all

hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=82
to /boot/config.txt to get 1920x1080 for RealVNC.

Good to know there is a way to change the resolution in VNC. A shame it's not a little more obvious. Maybe it is if you know enough.

But I thihnk I'll stick with xrdp, not least because its said to work better over low bandwidth links, and some of our clients have very low bandwidth.
