Hi all,
I'm a pretty experienced windows user/VB.net programmer, so I thought it would be nice to buy the RPi(512Mb jobby) learn it, so I could buy one each for the grandchildren. If they had problems granddad would be there to help.

I'm a bit of a geek so thought I could cope alone"little did I know" anyhoo I got the pi setup managed to run it I'm struggling a bit with Linux, now I know why windows is so popular!

Anyway down to the problem. I'm trying to get on the Internet wirelessly, too far from the router to connect a LAN cable. I bought an Edimax EW-7811un adaptor to do the job. the reason I bought that one is because I read about the script written by some clever sod :D here to easily get it up and working.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... =26&t=6256

I won't go into the escapade I had to get it to start but when it did it said. With this version of wheezy I should use the command "startx" and use the wifi app provided.

The wifi app see's the network but doesn't recognize it, so I can't add it. I tried the startx command, it cleared the desktop screen of icons, that's it. I tried not to bother you guys, but am now pulling my hair out, I've been on this all day and my brain is now pouring out of my ears as it has turned to mush.. :D

Forget the script, you don't need it with the latest Raspbian image. Theres an Icon on the LXDE desktop to set up the Wifi its called 'Wifi Config'. Your adapter already has the driver in the kernel so its only a matter of using built in software.

Just going to go over the basics not sure where it is going wrong

Are you using a powered hub?
When it see's it what do you mean doesn't recognize? Are you broadcasting SSID?

What does lsusb command show.

Thanks guys for the reply. I finally solved the problem. You know what it's like being a geek, we can't leave aproblem alone till we have solved it. Wear your badge "I'm a geek" with pride, where would the world be without us.

The solution as I applied it.

start the root command window set it to "cd /" then "startx" navigate to the wifi app through the start menu, start the app. scan the available networks then click OK, now from the file menu choose add, you now have to fill in yor ssid the nane of yor router/ home hub ie: BTHub5-6HN. Fill in your encryption method ie: wep etc then in the psk field your wireless key. this should be bobs your uncle time :D

I hope this helps someone else.

It's nice to see a forum where active members help us newbs. Cheers guy's
